Theatre and Entertainment Technology (Entertainment Technology) (A.S.)
The Associate in Science (A.S.) in Theatre and Entertainment Technology degree program comprises of basic theatre technology, general education and advanced specialized technical courses. Hands-on learning takes place in both a classroom setting and in live production situations to provide students with the principles and practices required for employment in the rapidly expanding entertainment industry.
Emphasis in this specialized program is placed on production. Many hours are required in the operation of the theatre plant, and the construction of scenery, properties and lighting of theatrical events. Students will be actively involved in the production of numerous music, dance and theatre events in the Nathan H. Wilson Center for the Arts on South Campus.
Industry Associations
The A.S. in Theatre and Entertainment Technology program is the apprentice program for the local chapter of the International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E) and students may begin working with the union as early as their second semester.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this program, students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following program learning outcomes:
- In TPA 1220, students will demonstrate: basic knowledge of electricity; basic knowledge of proper use and function of various theatrical lighting fixtures; and basic knowledge of color theory as it relates to stage lighting.
- Students will communicate effectively with coworkers, outside professionals and laymen with equal dexterity, utilizing proper industry terminology, in a manner demonstrating a clear understanding of the technology and the profession.
- Students will determine the proper materials, methods, and sequence of scenery construction to the proper specifications when presented with a set of Scenic Design Drawings.
- Students will hang, circuit, patch, trouble-shoot and focus stage lighting to the specifications of the Lighting Design.
- Students will function as part of a technical team in planning, implementing, and running the technical aspects of theatrical/entertainment productions.
- Students will Install and operate Sound, Lighting, and AV/Multimedia, equipment for a theatrical production
- Students will perform the duties of a stagehand to install and crew a live performance.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to react and respond quickly to resolve problems of implement any repairs to scenery, properties, costumes, rigging, lighting, sound, or AV equipment that might arise during a live performance.
- Students will understand, operate, and maintain theatre and shop equipment in a proper and safe manner.
- Students will demonstrate proficiency in the ability to conduct research using the internet, and other reference materials such as trade journals and historical resources, and to assimilate the material into concise written oral and audio/visual presentations.
Career Options
Upon completion of the program, students may work for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees as journeyman stage-hands or as specialists in the areas of stage carpentry, electrics, audio, properties, rigging, projection, or technical direction. Additionally, there are positions are available for stage technicians in the touring business of theatre, opera, dance, or the music industry. Stage technicians are employed by churches, cruise ships, convention centers, trade show companies, casinos, theme parks, the film industry, and other fields with live presentations.
Certifications/Licensing
Upon completion of this program, students may apply to take the examination for membership into the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the professional union representing backstage personnel. For more information about IATSE, visit https://iatse.net/.
