Interior Design Technology (A.S.)

If you are detail-oriented, love beautiful surroundings and have an eye for balance and color, then interior design may be your calling. FSCJ can help prepare you for a career doing what you enjoy. The Associate in Science (A.S.) in Interior Design Technology degree program will tap into your creativity using a balance of theory, practical hands-on training and real-life experience to provide you with the foundation you will need to become a successful designer. Interior designers learn the characteristics and performance of textiles, computer-aided drafting skills, space-planning skills, furniture and accessory arrangement, hand drawing, rendering and color selection, communication, presentation skills and portfolios are emphasized.

Industry Associations

Based on the professional standards established by The Council of Interior Design Accreditation and industry partners, the A.S. in Interior Design Technology degree will help you develop competencies in all phases of design.

Your degree will culminate with a professional internship during your last term that will provide you with experience in the interior design industry. It will consist of a course component and a minimum 180 hours interning in the field.

Career Options

Graduates qualify for entry-level positions with interior design studios, architectural firms, furniture and design showrooms, and other businesses specializing in interior furnishings. Types of career positions include interior designer, design assistant, sales representatives, CAD operator, interior decorator, merchandise displayer, and space planner. Designers are needed to respond to consumer expectations that the interiors of homes and businesses meet certain conditions, such as being environmentally friendly or more easily accessible.


Certifications/Licensing

Graduates of this program fulfill the educational requirements needed for eligibility to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam. Courses within the program may help students prepare to pursue optional certifications, including LEED Associate, Evidence-Based Design, Kitchen and Bath, and Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist.
