Program Learning Outcomes

In addition to classroom instruction, Barbering program students provide client services as part of the hands-on curriculum. All services are completed by the students under the supervision of an instructor who is also a licensed barber.

Barbering is a program that requires 900 contact hours and can be completed in 8 months or approximately two terms. Students have the option of attending the day or evening program. Attendance for this program is state mandated; therefore, before you begin the application process, please ensure that you will be able to attend 100% of the course.

  • Day classes meet Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. during the Fall and Spring. No classes are held on Saturday.
A minimum grade of C or higher must be achieved in all professional coursework.

Career Options

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook, overall employment of barbers is projected to increase 11 percent from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations. The need for barbers and hairdressers will stem primarily from population growth, leading to greater demand for basic hair care services. In addition, an increased demand for hair coloring, hair straightening, and other advanced hair treatments is expected to continue over the projections decade.

Certifications/Licensing

After successfully completing the program, students are qualified to take the barbering examination given by the Florida State Board of Barbers at myfloridalicense.com/DBPR/barbers. Licensing and certification for immediate employment in the field are obtained by passing this examination.
